First time parenting might lead to lots of anxiety and confusion regarding various facts about baby and his health. There might be various problems that you may face with your babies and vomiting is one of them.
Normal conditions of vomiting in a baby:
It’s not always abnormal for babies to vomit. During the initial weeks of their birth babies vomit very frequently as they adjust to the feed given to them. The condition when the babies are overfed also leads to vomiting. There are various other reasons as well that might cause vomiting to your child and these includes indigestion, car sickness , prolonged crying, excessive coughing and many more. Thus in the initial few years of baby there might be lot of vomiting. If there are no special signs of problem and your baby is healthy vomiting in such conditions is not a matter of worry and can be taken normally.
Conditions to worry:
Beside indigestion and overfeeding there might also be some serious problem in a baby that may cause vomiting and in such cases doctor should be consulted as soon as possible. Various signs that might indicate serious reasons of vomiting include swollen abdomen, abdominal pain, convulsions, irritability, repeated vomiting for more than 24 hours, blood in the vomit and many others. If it seems to you that your child is vomiting due to some special reasons then do not hesitate to consult a doctor.
Dealing with vomiting:
Vomiting results in loss of fluid from the body and thus liquid should be given to the babies after vomiting so that he does not get dehydrated. Just after vomiting give small amount of water at every half an hour to your child. And then if vomiting stops give him electrolyte solution or clear liquid at every half an hour. If these two doses are managed by baby to keep it down add milk of half strength to his diet. And then if vomiting does not happen for the next 12 to 24 hours you can start the regular diet along with lots of fluid. Sleeping may also help in such situations as stomach gets emptied into intestine during sleep only and the baby will also get settled down.
Thus during baby vomiting look out for the reasons and conditions and if something serious seems to you consult the doctor.
