It is always necessary to take care while feeding your baby at various stages so that he gets complete nutrition required for his growth and development. During the first 6 months breastfeeding is the best option for the baby and then as he grows up some solid food can be included in his diet along with breast milk. Generally baby food is given to the babies after 6 months and moreover there are other signs as well which will help you to recognise when your baby is ready for the solid food.

Identify the correct time to start giving baby food:
In order to identify the correct time for starting baby food one should look into aspects like baby’s interest in food. If your 6 month baby stares and tries to grab the food at your dining table then start including baby food in his diet. It is also necessary for a baby to support his own head in order to be fed on solid food as good neck and head support are very essential for the baby to sit. And above all if the child’s tongue thrust reflex gets diminished then you can think of starting solid food.

Feeding your baby with food:
The best time to feed your baby with food is when he is not cranky and tired. The child must be hungry at that time but not starving. The baby should be made to sit comfortably in your lap or in infant seat before feeding him with the food.

Generally the first food of the baby contains very little quantity of iron fortified rice cereal made for infant which is mixed with breast or formula milk. The initial servings are very small and are mixed with lots of liquid. It might be very much possible that your child rejects the first serving but do now worry as it is very natural. Slowly with the time your baby will get used to the food and will enjoy it.

Thus feeding baby food requires lot of precautions and care so that your child enjoys every bit of it.

Way of Feeding a newborn | feeding ways | Feeding a newborn

Feeding a newborn

Feeding a newborn is one of the most memorable experiences for any mother and it makes them feel satisfied and contended. For feeding your newborn in a manner which is comfortable for him as well as you certain points should be taken due care of.

Deciding the way of feeding:
Undoubtedly breastfeeding is the best option for a newborn as mothers milk is very healthy for a child and contains all necessary nutrition needed for his growth and development. But many a times due to various reasons and circumstances breastfeeding is not possible and in such cases bottle feed is given to a child using formula milk. Besides this there are other important considerations as well which should be taken care while feeding a newborn.

Avoid other liquids:
While newborn feeding either through mothers milk or through formula milk care should be taken that additional water, juices and other liquids are not given to the newborn as introduction of these fluids at early stage may cause diarrhoea to the child

Identify your baby’s cues and demand;
Always feed your newborn when he demands for it. Generally a newborn baby is fed after every 2-3 hours and around 8 to 12 times in a day. This quantity can also vary depending upon the demand of the newborn. And in order to know that your child is hungry try to recognise his cues like stretching, yawing, sucking his fist and many other

Know when your newborn is full:
It is necessary to know when your newborn is full. If your newborn stops sucking it may indicate their fullness or their break, and you need to identify between these two by trying to burp them and again offering them the breast. In case of fullness the baby will resist and move and otherwise if he is not full he will again start sucking the milk.

Correct position:
Correct position is also one of the major considerations while feeding a newborn. A baby should be kept in upright position while feeding and care should be taken that he is comfortable while taking feed.

Thus in order to make your baby comfortable and enjoy his feed due care and considerations should be taken.

Newborn baby feeding Tip's | breastfeeding newborn Tricks

Newborn baby feeding Tip's | breastfeeding newborn Tricks

Newborn feeding requires mothers to be very careful and cautious so that the child gets required nutrition for his growth and development. The first decision regarding the newborn feeding is the source of feeding. Mothers need to decide whether the child will be breastfed or will be fed by bottle. This decision does not entirely depend upon the mother’s decision but is also affected by other reasons and circumstances.

Breastfeeding or bottle feeding:
Undoubtedly breastfeeding is the best for the baby as it provides the baby with all essential nutrition needed for his growth. It is also recommended by WHO and AAP that a child should be breastfed exclusively for the first 6 months and then some solid food can be introduced but breastfeeding should be continued during the first year and if needed even after. But many a times it is not possible to breastfed a child due to conditions like working mothers, medicines intake by mother which are harmful for the child, insufficient milk production in mother and many others. In such cases where breast feeding is not possible a newborn is fed through a bottle using formula milk. There are many other factors that should be taken due care while newborn feeding.

Feed when baby demands:
Newborn feeding should be done on demand and mostly newborns need to be fed 8 to 12 times in a day. The feed should be given after every 2-3 hours and care should be taken that a child is not left unfed more than 4 hours otherwise his sugar level will decrease. As the time passes the baby will develop a predictable feeding pattern and a routine.

Identify the newborn feeding cues:
A newborn baby also tells us that he is hungry and the only thing we require is to understand his cues. There are many acts by newborn that indicates their hunger and most common ones include stretching themselves, yawning, making smacking sound through lips and putting fist in the mouth and sucking it. Every child gives different cue and you just need to well recognise them

Thus make your newborn feeding experience to be enjoyable for him as well as for you by proper care and consideration.

baby feeding bottle | breastfeeding bottle feeding bottle

baby feeding bottle | breastfeeding bottle feeding bottle

Bottle Feeding

Undoubtedly breastfeeding is the best way to feed your child as the mothers milk is healthy and contains appropriate quantity of nutrition required for a Childs growth. But many a times it is not possible for a mother to breast feed his child due to different reasons and in such cases a child needs bottle feeding. If a mother is taking some type of medicine which is harmful for the child she cannot breast feed the child. In many cases there is a nervous shock to the mother which stops the milk production and thus bottle feeding remains the option. For the working mothers bottle feeding also becomes a necessary option. Thus whatever may be the reasons that lead to bottle feeding due care should be taken while giving the formula milk to your child.
Precautions while bottle feeding:

Various precautions should be adhered while giving bottle feed to your child.
• First of all the bottles should be checked for their expiry date so that it does not cause any harm to the child.
• Sterilizing and cleaning the bottles properly after every use is very necessary to make sure that the bottles do not contain any germs and harmful bacteria.
• Babies should be avoided to feed during their sleep as it leads to problem of tooth decay.
• Positioning is also very important while bottle feeding and a child should be positioned semi upright before bottle feeding.
• Never use the leftover milk and always wash off immediately as it can lead to bacteria breeding.

Nipple of bottle should be cared properly:
While feeding your baby through bottle the care of the nipples should be done properly. The hole of in the nipple should be of appropriate size so that a child is comfortable taking the milk. A hole which is too big or even too small poses a problem for the child. Sterilize the nipple after every use and replace them when ever needed.
Advantages of bottle feeding:
Although breast feeding is the best way of feeding your child but there are also advantages of bottle feeding.
First of all bottle feeding leads to the knowledge of milk required by a child and also let the mother knows the exact nutrition going to the child. Moreover bottle feeding can be done by anyone present at home and not necessarily the mother. And in public places when breast feeding becomes an embarrassing situation bottle feeding comes to the rescue.

Thus bottle feeding can also be advantageous for your child but due care and precautions should be taken.

Infant Feeding Guidelines | Infant Schedule | Infant Feeding Guide

Infant Feeding Guidelines | Infant Schedule | Infant Feeding Guide

Infant feeding
The first year of your baby is very crucial for his development and proper feed should be given during this time. It is the first year of the baby where he gains maximum growth. Initial 6 months the baby should be given mothers milk exclusively as it is healthy for the child and contains all necessary ingredients required for his growth. As the baby grows variety of healthy foods can be included in his diet so that he has good pattern of healthy eating through out his life.

Infant Feeding during first 6 months:
The breast milk is the best feed for the baby during first 6 months. A child can be fed on this breast milk exclusively as the quality and quantity is sufficient for the Childs development and growth. Mother’s milk contains appropriate quantity of fat, protein, water and sugar which is good for the new born. Mother’s milk also contains various anti infective factors that protect an infant from various infections, allergies and diseases. Moreover it is also recommended by WHO and AAP to feed your child exclusively on mother’s milk for the initial 6 months. During this period small and frequent feeds should be given to the child so that he remains sufficed and full. Initially it may be difficult for a child to know his feeding pattern but within few months he gets used to it and becomes comfortable.

Infant Feeding after 6 months:
As your child grows and is over 6 months, some additional healthy diets can be given to him. Initially dry infant foods and cereals can be given to the baby but in very small quantity. Start with a tablespoon and when the child gets used to it you can increase the quantity. Do not give your child new type of food everyday as he is not used to such eating patterns. Wait for a week before starting any new food so that you come to know if your baby is allergic to any particular food or not. Slowly and gradually as your child grows you can include variety of healthy foods for his over all growth and development.

Thus infant feeding should be taken due care with respect to the type of food and quantity given so that a child gets proper nutrition needed for his growth.

Feeding the Tube | Feeding Tubes | Types,Problems,Positive

Feeding the Tube | Feeding Tubes | Types,Problems,Positive

Feeding Tube
The normal way of feeding an infant is through breastfeeding where the child sucks the milk from the mother’s breast. But many a times due to certain reasons the child is not able to suck the milk and in such conditions an infant is fed through a feeding tube.
Reasons of using feeding tube:
There are numerous reasons and circumstances which lead to the usage of feeding tube for an infant.
• If the baby is premature and has gestational age of less than 33 weeks then there is no development of pattern where he can suck milk from the mother’s breast and in such conditions use of feeding tube becomes necessary. This condition also prevails if the baby is under the weight of 3 pounds.
• Another reason which leads to the use of feeding tube is the cardiac and respiratory problems in infant which leaves him without the adequate energy to suck and swallow.
• Lack of Neurological coordination in an infant leads to slow swallowing and sucking and thus child becomes exhausted and tired without getting full nutrition and feed. In such conditions an infant is fed through a tube.
Types of feeding tube:
There are two main types of feeding tubes available for your child. The first one is nasogastric tubes or the orogastric tubes which are inserted in oral pharyngeal area. The other type of the tube is called gastronomy tubes or jeujenostomy tubes. Both these tubes are chosen as per the needs and requirements of a child.

Problems using feeding tube:
If due to any reason a child is inserted with a feeding tube just after his birth then in such cases the child losses the opportunity of having association between the mouth sensations and the hunger. And even if feeding orally becomes possible in later stages then too he will lack this association. Other problems caused due to feeding tubes include increased gastroesophageal reflux, lack of sensory experience of the food, hypersensitive face and mouth and above all these tubes are unpleasant and uncomfortable.

Be positive:
Children who are receiving the feed through tubes can be motivated for safe and comfortable oral feeding skills through various therapy programmes which are designed specially for this purpose. There are also other ways by which parents can try to develop feeding pattern orally.

Infant Feeding Position | Breast Feeding Position | Bottle Feeding position

Infant Feeding Position | Breast Feeding Position | Bottle Feeding position

Feeding Baby

Mother’s milk is the best source of nutrition for an infant as it contains all necessary ingredients that are needed for the growth and development of the baby. Feeding a baby needs good care and consideration with respect to the various factors. Due care should be taken for the babies feeding pattern, position and comfort.

Proper feeding is important during first year:

Adequate Feeding during the first year of the baby is very important as makes the baby healthy and fit and less prone to get infected. It is recommended by WHO and AAP that an infant should be fed exclusively on the mother’s milk for the first 6 months, as mother’s milk is a perfect nutritional diet for a child. The quality and the quantity of the mother’s milk are perfect for an infant. More the baby sucks, more is the production of the mothers milk and hence do not worry about any insufficient quantity. Initially it might be difficult for the baby to develop his pattern of feeding but within few weeks he gets comfortable with it.

Take care while feeding your baby:

Due care should be taken while feeding the baby so that he enjoys his feed and feel comfortable. First of all make him wear loose comfortable clothing while feeding so that your child does not get irritated in between. Change the diapers before the feed as the child’s tummy will be full after feeding. Do not be in a hurry while feeding and give pauses in between so as to make the child comfortable. Feed your child frequently during the day with smaller quantities so that he remains comfortable and sufficed. Overfeeding in any case will definitely cause him problem.

Feeding Position:

One of the most important aspects of feeding your baby is the position. While feeding your baby keep him in the upright position. After completing the feed hold him upright for around half an hour so that food gets hold in their tummies. Keeping them motionless after the feed is also very important.

Thus adequate feeding patterns, positions and care will certainly make feeding an enjoyable experience for your baby as well as for you.

Baby and Vomiting |Infant Vomiting |Toddler Vomiting

Baby and Vomiting |Infant Vomiting |Toddler Vomiting

First time parenting might lead to lots of anxiety and confusion regarding various facts about baby and his health. There might be various problems that you may face with your babies and vomiting is one of them.

Normal conditions of vomiting in a baby:
It’s not always abnormal for babies to vomit. During the initial weeks of their birth babies vomit very frequently as they adjust to the feed given to them. The condition when the babies are overfed also leads to vomiting. There are various other reasons as well that might cause vomiting to your child and these includes indigestion, car sickness , prolonged crying, excessive coughing and many more. Thus in the initial few years of baby there might be lot of vomiting. If there are no special signs of problem and your baby is healthy vomiting in such conditions is not a matter of worry and can be taken normally.

Conditions to worry:
Beside indigestion and overfeeding there might also be some serious problem in a baby that may cause vomiting and in such cases doctor should be consulted as soon as possible. Various signs that might indicate serious reasons of vomiting include swollen abdomen, abdominal pain, convulsions, irritability, repeated vomiting for more than 24 hours, blood in the vomit and many others. If it seems to you that your child is vomiting due to some special reasons then do not hesitate to consult a doctor.

Dealing with vomiting:
Vomiting results in loss of fluid from the body and thus liquid should be given to the babies after vomiting so that he does not get dehydrated. Just after vomiting give small amount of water at every half an hour to your child. And then if vomiting stops give him electrolyte solution or clear liquid at every half an hour. If these two doses are managed by baby to keep it down add milk of half strength to his diet. And then if vomiting does not happen for the next 12 to 24 hours you can start the regular diet along with lots of fluid. Sleeping may also help in such situations as stomach gets emptied into intestine during sleep only and the baby will also get settled down.

Thus during baby vomiting look out for the reasons and conditions and if something serious seems to you consult the doctor.

Breast Feeding a baby | Baby feeding guidelines

Breast Feeding a baby | Baby feeding guidelines

Baby feeding guidelines

Parenting is the most wonderful feeling on this earth and it also brings along with it lots of confusion related to many factors and especially feeding. There are whole lot of people who gives you loads of advice for how and what to feed your baby. But it is always better to go with the recommendations of the professionals and the doctors. Whatever we need to follow becomes the guideline. There are certain baby feeding guidelines which are generally followed by all and they have been drafted after much consideration.

Initial 6 Months:
For the initial months of the baby breastfeeding is the best option as the mothers milk is a perfect source of nutrition for a child. Breast feeding is an art where both mother and baby have to master. Every individual uses a new method or different pattern to breast feed the child; which does not match with others. When you face with problem to breast feed then primary help should be taken from the doctor or midwife. Some of the causes and answers to this breast feeding issue are put here.

* Baby tends to feed all the time; the reason could be improper positioning or insufficient supply of milk. Make sure the position of the baby is proper while feeding and allow them to feed on demand.
* Painful or bleeding or cracked nipples are caused due to bad positioning. Reposition the baby by inserting finger in his mouth and break his grip. Rub some milk on the nipples, to heal it.
* A thrush appears as white marks on cracked nipples. Thrush becomes visible if either the baby or the mom is on antibiotics or there could be no particular reason. Any oral medication or anti-fungal cream cures it.
* Flat or lumpy nipples with hard and full breasts; this condition is termed as engorgement. Engorgement can happen in many conditions: firstly on third or fourth day of the baby’s birth. Second when baby lessens number of feeds; this condition could reduce milk producing quantity. Warm shower bath, warm flannel clothing or chilled cabbage leaves help in reduce swelling.
* Free flow of milk could be stopped due to small tender lumps in duct of the breast. This can be resolved by massaging the area or use warm squeeze. These lumps generally form because of improper sleeping position, etc.
* Redness of breast and swelling along with temperature or aches is called as Mastitis. Proper rest and use of cold and warm compress reduces the swelling. Breast feeding should not be seized.

Whatever be the cause of inconvenience, mother should not stop breast feeding the child. If the above solutions do not work consult a doctor immediately.

Breast feeding mother milk | mothers milk

Breast feeding mother milk | mothers milk

There are many guides channeling about treating your new born, dos and don’ts to be followed, feeding positions, schedules, timings, charts and many more details. But, the basal things have to be taken care first like feeding the infant.

Breast milk is considered to be the primary source of nutrients to the infants. It is a must for the mother to breast feed the baby till it can feed on other supplements and solid foods. Lactation should be provided to the new born at frequent intervals. However is the procedure of feeding; that is through breast or expressed milk stored in bottles, baby should be fed with the breast milk.

Breast milk operates on a procedure of supply and demand. How much ever it is fed to the baby; your body inclines to produce more. If you leave milk in your breasts without feeding the baby then producing of milk would stop. It is proposed to store breast milk for reducing bacterial growth. There are different ways to express milk that is: by hand, by pumping machine, etc. Breast milk that is stored in refrigerators has to be warmed and then fed to the baby because the milk that is instantly produced by breasts is warm. Maintain hygiene when you feed the child. This could when you express the milk into bottles or breast feed. Store breast milk in clean and good containers; in a way to keep the milk free from contamination. If there is any problem related to the lactation, immediately see a doctor or a midwife. At any point of time don’t replace breast milk with any normal milk.

It is highly important to feed healthy and proper diet in the first year of baby life. The condition where the baby tends to have problem while feeding is termed as dysphagia. Now days many pediatricians have cases pertaining to problem of feeding. For some this issue would be in the initial stages and later recovered, but there are events where the problem has extended for years. There could be many reasons for the child to suffer from this feeding problem; some of which could be gastrointestinal, respiratory or cardiac issues. The task of sucking – swallowing and breathing is complex and often an issue for premature or sick children. Other reasons for feeding problems could be motor and sensory integration disorder and in children with development disabilities. Some of the symptoms and causes that children with feeding problems show are: spitting up, vomiting, over feeding, under feeding, dehydration, etc.
Spitting up or burping where the baby spits out the swallowed breast milk through mouth or nose. This issue generally stops between 7 and 12 months, but if it continues; then the cause could be gastro intestinal. Vomiting might be caused due to viral infections or gastric problems. Most of the times, this issue is also resolved on its own. Over indulgence of food whenever the baby cries, and under feeding or supplying less number of nutrients to the infant body would result in this issue.
There are some procedures taken up to clear this inability of feeding and parents should be part of it. Children facing with feeding problem tend to lack the requisite nutrients, because the baby does not breast feed. The infant is given tube feedings to supply proper foods. Kids with feeding problems should be taken extra care than the usual babies. They should be fed with extra amounts of nutrients, calories, and other healthy supplements. It is advised that the feeder should be given food that was formerly accepted and slowly try to modify the taste, texture and quantity. This kind of procedure to an extent would clear the issue.
An issue pertaining to the child can be absolved when more love and care is rendered at the right time.

Breast feeding issues| Baby feeding | Infant feeding issues

Breast feeding issues| Baby feeding | Infant feeding issues

Feeding issues differ from age to age. This could start during the starting days of baby birth or in due course of time. Let the concerns not raise, if the baby does not intake good quantity of food in its initial stages. Firstly check for the weight of the baby, if it depicts normal rate then give the baby its time to suckle. Few babies have problem while feeding this could be because cleft, premature birth, general illness, etc. If the issue does not fall in any of these categories and the baby is not feeding properly, then check if the baby is suffering from gastro-esophageal, cystic fibrosis, food tolerance or any other form of ailments. The baby ailed with any of these diseases, do not gain weight.
Apart from neonates; the problem of feeding is spread even to the older children. The factors that might cause feeding problems in older kids are: emotional, social factors or eating disorders like anorexia nervosa and bulimia. There is no gender barring for feeding problems, both the sexes carry this issue. Symptoms for disorder might vary, but common indications include:
• Food denial
• Lack of appetite
• Acute abdominal pain (colic)
• Diarrhoea
• Constipation
• Weeping before or after food
• Vomiting
• Behavioural problems
• Fail to gain weight

Most of the feeding problems in small babies or toddlers or growing children, are resolved by themselves without any medical aid. But if the issue is grave it is always advised to seek the help of a general physician or pediatrist. Major side effect of this feeding problem is loss of weight.

Children with this disorder should not be forced to indulge in eating. Be flexible in handling and adapting to the eating habits of your kids. For few weeks give them the freedom or chance to pamper them with the kind of food they wish for. Forceful eating would result in bad eating patterns.

At times toddlers tend to consume very less quantity releasing concerns in parents or care takers. But, this condition is quite normal in many kids. It is always good to follow some healthy regime helping the child to intake new foods that bear good amount of nutrients, calories and other healthy supplements. If certain thumb rules are followed while feeding the child, then it paves a path of happiness for both the feeder and the child.

Guidelines:
• Every time you supply new foods to the child, ensure that it is coupled with familiar foods.
• Allow the child to consume till they are full. This usually happens with babies that are breast fed. This kind of feeding is also termed as bunch feeding. Wherein, the mother tends to feed the baby not a scheduled time. It is actually recommended that you feed the baby when he/she is hungry rather clock the timings and feed. As the baby grows it tends to consume more milk than its starting days of birth, due to which the consumption times also increase. Initially infant might have consumed three to four ounces of milk with proper intervals or when the baby wanted to.
Whenever the baby calls for more milk he would want to suckle more often which results in increase of breast milk; and this is what results in cluster feeding. It is conceived that baby cluster fed mostly in the evening time; but some nursed babies cluster feed even in the day time.

Cluster feeding is mostly put into practice during baby’s fussy time. Just to calm the baby; moms allow baby to suckle and this becomes a pattern for the baby. One should not worry if the baby feeds more number of times; this does not mean that supply of milk is less. One should understand the concept that more the baby feeds more milk would be produced.

Six to eight weeks is the stage where the baby starts to grow and would be demanding four ounces of milk every four hours. Infants tend to go to sleep as soon as they are fed; so it’s proposed to feed the baby late in the night; so that both you and baby can have a long nap without a break. Cluster feed by the baby is a common behavioural form.

Do not put the baby into tight schedules for feeding just because you are getting apprehensive of the drinking patterns of the baby. Starting few months baby has to be fed whenever it feels hungry, and this is stated as the best method. At times babies suck to console themselves. This is all in the act of nurturing of the baby.

Breastfeeding Guidelines | Feeding guide | Feeding a newborn

Breastfeeding Guidelines | Feeding guide | Feeding a newborn

Most to be mothers prepare themselves well advanced for birth of the child and the chances are rare that they are aware everything about breastfeeding and its rewards to the infant.
